The hardest part of social networking
As far as I’m concerned, it is actually getting to know people. How many people do you know online? How many of those people have you ever met offline? Have you gotten coffee? Chatted at a conference or networking event? Do you get together just as any other friends would?
If someone came to you needing a favor, would you be more likely to help them if you were friends or if you were business contacts? Friends, right?
The more time you spend getting to know your contacts, the more quality and value you will find in your network. I struggle with this too, but if you don’t actually try, what’s the point in spending so much time on twitter, facebook, blogs, or anything else?

I *totally* agree! I have finally started blogging (occasionally), Facebook, LinkedIn, but how do I take it to the next step? Have you read “Never Eat Alone”? It is on my never ending list …

I’ll have to look up “Never Eat Alone.” Personally, I like to use Facebook as a sort of aggregator of my online activities. I’ve set up Notes, Twitter, Friendfeed, etc to pull in the content I create and interact with in other places. LinkedIn is really good, in my opinion, for also sharing blog posts (thru one of the apps) and for asking and answering questions of a business nature. Some people make their names, in a small way, by being active in LinkedIn discussions.
If you have any questions about blogging, shoot me an email or tweet me. I’m more than happy to help in any way I can.
Thanks, Carolyn!

Is social networking really the same as socializing with people face to face? Or does it serve as more of a shield to protect oneself from having true social intercourse with a germy, contrary, unfamiliar person.
Social networking personas can be used as a mask, to hide one’s authentic self from the world. This could be good or bad. Just acknowledge that it’s not the same as meeting another person for tea and crumpets.

You make a good point. Social networking is a tool for potential success, not a key to success guaranteed sucess. When it comes down to it, people being able to see you face to face and/or hear your voice will always be much more valuable to you than a personal email or a tweet.
