Know your cost centers
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009Those are all fine and dandy… if you have the time and money to manage them well. Honestly, running a blog takes a lot of time. So does Twittering effectively. If you don’t believe me, check out Tweetwasters to see how much time you’ve spent twittering (found with the help of @martinwedgwood, @dorondinovitzer, & @clarocada). And, all of us know Facebook addicts, right? All of that time spent blogging, twittering, facebooking, etc has to come from somewhere.
On top of the time spent trying to really do these things well, it costs money to run a good blog. Yes, it can be argued that you can run a successful, free blog on blogspot.com or wordpress.com, but really, how many of those have you seen? The best bloggers pay for hosting, images, and more. That costs money.
If you have an unrelated day job and aspire to leverage new media for your career (or life), you might be able to do it, but if you follow the generic advice that you need to be everywhere, you’ll either do such a poor job that no one will pay attention or you’ll spend so much time on it when you should be doing other things that your boss, spouse, friends, and family members will be unhappy with you.
What am I trying to say? Know what you’re getting into before you heed the too often repeated “be a content producer” call.
