If you’re not the right provider, tell me who is
I know that this blog is not for everyone, even though I would love for it to be, so I often reference places that would be better fits and/or better sources of information for what my readers, tweeple, conference connections, etc desire. I hope that my contacts realize that, appreciate it, and do decide to come back to me when I do have what they need (instead of going to someone else).
- If you’re a salesperson, do you listen to your potential customer to see if your product fits him or do you try to make him fit your product? As a job seeker, do you apply to every job you see and try to make yourself fit the qualifications or do you recommend your friends for the jobs that just aren’t right for you?
- One of the things that I appreciate most in people is when they recognize where a potential fit exists, whether it’s with them or not, and then they tell me about it. Even if they direct me somewhere else, I will remember that they were more concerned with solving my problem than they were with making a sale, and the next time that I need what they have, I will go back to them instead of one of their competitors.
