The evolution of a buzzword – Social media

Back when the term “social media” wasn’t even the germ of a thought, 5-10 years ago:
Average Joe: “So, what do you do?”
You: “I market in emerging online channels.”
Average Joe: “Oh, so you’re a marketer.”

When only the in folks knew it was called social media, 3-5 years ago:
“So, what do you do?”
“I work in social media.”
“Huh?”
“Online marketing.”

When the broader internet community picked it up, 2-3 years ago:
“So, what do you do?”
“I work in social media.”
“Hmm… Cool. So, you try to sell things in blogs & MySpace?”
“Um, not really.”

When the rest of society learned the term, 1-2 years ago:
“So, what do you do?”
“I’m an interactive marketer.”
“Huh?”
“Social media.”

Now:
“So what do you do?”
“I’m an inbound marketer.”
“I’m an inbound marketer too… Actually, my title is Social Media Guru to be exact.”
