Jaynie – Song #1 in 52 Song Project

What did I learn from this first week?

  • My voice is not nearly as strong as I recall ;-)
  • Writing takes about 10% of the total time for me
  • This is a much bigger project than I first thought it would be

Please let me know what you think. I’ll admit that I started with a very simple song, my voice is pretty weak right now, and that I did not spend any time on correct mixing or re-recording of poorly played parts, but I didn’t want to get in over my head in the first week and get discouraged.

You can download the mp3 HERE or from my not-updated-in-forever MySpace page.

Again, please tell me what you think… the good and the bad ;-) And, let me know if there’s a style you would like to hear, think I could do better, any of that.

See the those little Share buttons just to the right? Please share this. Maybe, I’ll do a more energetic song sometime where I incorporate the names of everyone who tweets these songs :-D Thoughts?

Nice job! Keep going! I'll be waiting for the next one. :)
  • Way to much reverb on the vocals, the doubling was not as effective as it could have been, the bass was inaccurate in places and the guitar was huge fun.

None of the above really mattered, I really like the idea of people making their own music and especially with stuff like Audacity. There is something very "Whole Earth Catalog" about it.

Consider picking up something like a Zoom H4n (or its equivalent), there is a great comparison of the portable recorder market over on the Oreilly website http://bit.ly/12HWeQ.

I had a similar idea that came out of a discussion about making music with constrained palettes. Instead of using every plugin /effect / instument under the sun and taking 5 months to discover you got it wrong, do something like only use one guitar, all the tracks in a Zoom H4 (and the effects it has buitin) and you have an hour to come up with something and publish it to the web.

Like you I was going to tru for one a week (no vocals or lyrics yet) and have only managed to get two done. But I love the idea.

Suggestions? I want to hear more of the Takamine so something acoustic, uptempo and without a ton of processing on your voice.

Thanks for doing this, I look forward to seeing whats next.

Oh yeah I'm @prepostra and I found you through your follow. Glad I did.

  • Thanks, Thatch. Yeah, I'm going to have to work on the strength and tonality of my voice so I can have a bit more confidence in it. I had no problems when I was on stage every other week, but that was quite a while back now ;-)

For the past few years, I've used a very simple M-Audio Mobile Pre USB interface and Logic on my Mac. For this project, I'm still using the Mobile Pre, but trying to find all of the free Windows software I can... whether that's mixing/recording software, percussion programs, effects, etc. Although, this week, I may go back to Logic to save a lot of time on recording ;-)

I agree with you about constrained palettes; I think that's where a lot of innovation comes from. Of course, even when I sit down thinking that, I get into the music and start to think that is would sound awesome with just a little of this and now a bit of that and oh yeah a hint of something else.

If you're doing just the instrumentation, do you think you could go for a collaboration project? Like, you produce one song a week, post it online, ask for people to write &/or record the lyrics they would put to it, and then publish the finished project the next week?
  • Not my type of music, but I'm always jealous of guys that can play guitar... I feel they can pull the ladies a little easier... hahaha

I want to see a twitter song!
  • Ha! Thanks, Derek. Yeah, not too in love with this recording. Seems better to me live & faster. Looks like maybe I need to work on my recording/mixing skills ;-)

I think a Twitter song will probably come out in the first month since it seems like there's so much subject matter available for lyrics right now :-)
  • First of all, you've put yourself in the minority of people just by taking the time to record something and put it out for people to hear...so congratulations!!! I think that is awesome.

I think the tune is good, but maybe a tiny bit slow. I think you could still get the same feel by increasing the tempo a bit. I like the words of the song. Some of my favorite songs are very simple, so certainly do not let that discourage you.

I would say to make sure you are pronouncing the consonants at the end of your words, especially at the end of a line. Most people starting out drop them for some reason (I did), but you will be amazed at how different and clear it sounds just by making a point to annunciate them.

But, ya know, these are my opinions...and we all know there's a much higher supply than demand for those. LOL!

Look forward to more!!! Keep up the good work.
  • Thanks a million, David. Yeah, I realized after recording the guitar and bass that I should have bumped the tempo by maybe 8-10 bpm and that I should have played the bass more on top of or ahead of the beat, rather than laying back as I did. I did 2 takes on the bass and accidentally deleted the one I liked, but didn't want to redo it ;-)

Thanks for you advice on the vocals. I realized in recording this that it's so easy to forget what you used to take for granted... in that my lungs and voice in general used to be quite a bit stronger from singing in a choir and leading a band, but apparently, that stuff goes away if you don't use it. I should have realized that, but didn't even think about it beforehand unfortunately.

I really appreciate your input. Over the holiday weekend, I'm going to try to come up with a more upbeat song to contrast with this one :-)
  • You are correct in that it does go away. :( Mine went away until I had kids...now they get subjected to my singing non-stop, especially in the car.

PS - I love that you take the time to respond to the people that comment.
  • Lol. Parental singing... a hallmark of every childhood, right? ;-)

Thank you very much, and have a great weekend. Time for me to take a little break :-)
