Twitter is the new Second Life, is the new WoW, is the new…

chatWhen chat rooms were first taking off some time in the 90s, I thought it was ridiculous that people could become “friends” with people they “met” online. It seemed silly to me.

In the late 90s and and early 2000s, I had a number of friends that were really into IRC. When it came to file sharing, I got that part. I did not get how they became so attached to the people they “met” on there and how they seemed to really know their personalities.

Then came World of Warcraft and Second Life. Not only could people chat with complete strangers, but they could interact with them with purpose. I have never been much of a game player, so it still went over my head how you could become friends with a person you had never met, but it really happens… as a portion of this video demonstrates.

Now, I have been really active on Twitter for just about one year now, and at some point not long ago, I realized that Twitter has taken over the position of chat rooms, IRC, WoW, etc for a small group of people. Twitterers are building friendships and really getting to know each other.

After not getting it with these other mediums, I have seen that it really is possible to build meaningful relationships with people you have never met. Odd, isn’t it?

Has anyone else noticed this?

NOTE: And, no, this does not mean that I fell in love on the internet… well unless you count falling in love with Twitter :-P

  • Odd indeed, but cool too. 140 characters helps keep people from rambling as well. ;']
  • I think there is a fair difference in tweeting between people that live in the city and people that live in more rural areas. In rural areas its much harder to find people into the same things as you on twitter so the chances of ever getting to know people in RL through twitter is much slimmer. I think the only way to build up a proper friendship is in RL, there is only so far u can go (in terms of knowing people) through the internet. Especially in 140chrs. For people living in the city and being able to meet fellow twitterers easier maybe it is different. I use twitter almost entirely as a news/entertainment source.
