Twitter is the new Second Life, is the new WoW, is the new…
When chat rooms were first taking off some time in the 90s, I thought it was ridiculous that people could become “friends” with people they “met” online. It seemed silly to me.
In the late 90s and and early 2000s, I had a number of friends that were really into IRC. When it came to file sharing, I got that part. I did not get how they became so attached to the people they “met” on there and how they seemed to really know their personalities.
Then came World of Warcraft and Second Life. Not only could people chat with complete strangers, but they could interact with them with purpose. I have never been much of a game player, so it still went over my head how you could become friends with a person you had never met, but it really happens… as a portion of this video demonstrates.
Now, I have been really active on Twitter for just about one year now, and at some point not long ago, I realized that Twitter has taken over the position of chat rooms, IRC, WoW, etc for a small group of people. Twitterers are building friendships and really getting to know each other.
After not getting it with these other mediums, I have seen that it really is possible to build meaningful relationships with people you have never met. Odd, isn’t it?
Has anyone else noticed this?
NOTE: And, no, this does not mean that I fell in love on the internet… well unless you count falling in love with Twitter
