Blogging’s diminishing returns & Why you should still have one

Who should have a blog? You should.

What will you get out of it? What you put into it. . . maybe more if you’re lucky.

Will you become internet famous if you do a really good job? Probably not.

Why? If you surf on over to news aggregators or blog lists like Reddit, Digg, Yahoo Buzz, Alltop, or Technorati, how many blogs do you find with real, substantive content? Not many, right? The blog market, if you can call it that, is saturated both with fountains of knowledge, art, hilarity, etc and with crap.

Your chance to make your name in blogging pretty much passed when the term blogging first started to hint at becoming a household word. When was that? Two years ago? Maybe three?

Not every niche has been carved out in blogging, but nearly every exploitable one has. So, where does this leave you, the person looking to make a name for himself, the guy (or girl) that wants to advertise, connect, network, and demonstrate value to potential employers or clients, the company that wants to interact with its users or just be seen as hip, or the person that simply wants to express himself?

In this day and age, it’s still a good idea to have a blog if you want to do any of those things. Your only readers might be people that are specifically looking for you, but if that’s a potential employer with a spectacular job offer, does it really matter whether you’re internet famous with 10,000 pageviews/day versus an unknown with 5 pageviews/day? No. What matters is the quality of the content.

I like to read Where is Bob. I’m sure that it does not get a ton of visits/day, but it’s hilarious, so who cares?!

I visit The Eastside Life every day. Who goes there? Mostly, I assume, it’s a tiny percentage of people that live in Seattle’s eastside.

Does it matter to the people that run those blogs how many people look at them? Probably not.

The important thing is that the right people look at them, because for you, creating quality content and having the right person find it could be the difference between getting and missing your next big break.

  • @Eric nope, that was just a little bit of K9 humor with a liberal dash of sarcasm sprinkled with a touch of cynicism. Your message hit the center target. I;m always amazed at what gets people to my blog...

When things start slowing down, I just need to throw something up there with "Palin" and "pit bull" in the title and I've got traffic stoked up again :-)

Ultimately, though, I'm not making money and don't ever intend to with my blog, but if it lightens my day then it was worth the time to write. If it lightens up somebody else's day, even better.

What affects me, affects you. Keep writing, even when you hear no sounds coming from the doghouse.

And, yeah, Alltop.com ROCKS! The best way you can give back for them listing your blog is to keep it active and interesting! @neenz @guykawasaki

  • Ha. I guess you make a good point. I hope that it didn't sound I was saying that bloggers should want to exclude certain readers, but rather that the quality of the content and the quality of the reader is, in my mind, more valuable than large quantities of either. ;-)

Nice job on alltop. I got one blog the top spot in its category. I haven't even bothered with this blog, but it's definitely on my to do list.
  • I would comment on your blog post, but that would mean that I have actually read it... but, do you really care that I read your blog post? :-)

Good points. I still think getting into Alltop.com is just the most wicked cool thing that could happen to a blog. We're in Jobs, Coffee, Pets and Soccer. Still working on crazybloggers.alltop.com but it is just a matter of time.
