If You Want to Promote Yourself…Then Promote!

When you want to find a review of a restaurant where do you go? When your plumbing needs to be fixed where do you go? What about when you want to find someone that teach you guitar? The answer to all of these questions is the internet and if you’re not on it then you are pretty much invisible to the world.
Have you ever tried Googling yourself? What comes up? Perhaps a facebook or myspace profile? The bad thing about having your facebook profile show up #1 for your name is you don’t control it. Whoever searches for you is going to see some of your party pics, ridiculous wall posts, etc. You need to create an actual website and get it to rank well for your name/keywords (learn some SEO or better yet Technical SEO), then you need to make sure that you create an online presence that you want to project. Blogs are one of the most effective ways to self promote yourself and they are easy to get going. What are you passionate about?
Do you like underwater basket weaving? Then go write about it, write it about ever day and tell people about it. Get on twitter, facebook, myspace etc. and tell the world about your blog. Put the link to your blog on your email signature and on your business cards.
You are not going to discovered you have to make yourself discoverable. You have to control your brand by pumping out quality content all the time, by commenting on other industry related blogs, by going to offline events, and by working your ass off!
If you want to promote yourself…THEN PROMOTE!
