Don’t park your SUV in a compact spot!

I took these pictures yesterday at about 7pm, while leaving the Bellevue Galleria parking garage. On the way in, I saw at least 6 cars parked like this. One, these SUVs shouldn’t be in compact spots. Two, if they’re going to take up two spots, they should have to pay twice as much as me. I have a small car, but even I can’t fit in a space that has 25% of it taken up by the careless parking of some douche in an F-150. Does the parking garage do anything about it? No. Why? No clue. Even if you say something, they just give you a blank stare. I swear, lazy people. . . or as XKCD would say, adjective ass-noun.”

  • Ha. Okay, I'd accept that as a legitimate excuse, but I'd still be mad. :-P
  • Too many drugs? ;)
  • Yeah, I can understand a bit of crazy parking when the weather is horrible, and it's all you can do to get your car to stop (say on ice), but really, what's the excuse for parking within just a few inches of another car when you have space on the other side?
  • HAHAHAHA! Wow, I'm going to have to remember that. Holy crow, some of those pics are incredible. Unbelievable what some people will do.
  • Ah, good point. I hadn't even thought that it could be a friend. I'm thinking that, next time I see this, I'll check with the people the businesses in the building to see if they can kick the garage people in the butts to get something done. Turns out there's a whole site dedicated to bad parkers.
  • Any possibility it's a friend of the parking attendant, and that's why he won't take action on this guy? Can you go to the building management? I would imagine parking spaces are in short supply and if you're paying for the space, they could be losing money by losing a space to this tool.
  • Yesterday, one of the same cars was parked in the same manner. The top photo is the same as the original post. The bottom is from yesterday. What a bastard.
  • Yeah, I could definitely see having some of those. I went by today, and one of the same cars was still there. How do parking garage attendants not notice these things, especially when you point them out?!
  • Ha!I promise it wasn't me. I only parted with those cards to the most egregious offenders (occupying two or more spaces, by parking at crazy angles). You can tell the ones that do it intentionally to keep other cars from parking near their precious baby, or park so badly you couldn't get out of a space without hitting them.
  • Now that you mention that, someone did once leave something like that on my car. Apparently, I had parked too close to them. I'm not really certain, but I do recall thinking something like, "What the?! People actually carry these around?"
  • I used to have some small cards, the size of a business card, with a graphic of a car parallel-parked between two others that it had obviously crashed into trying to fit into a too-tight space. Underneath it read, "Did you have to park this way, or are you just a selfish bastard?" You could leave them on cars you found parked like this ;) I haven't been able to find anymore of them for years.
  • Yeah, in Seattle, there's pretty much no reason to drive an SUV except that a lot of people want to feel safe in them. . . nevermind that they're more likely to roll than other cars and that, if they do get in a wreck, they'll probably kill the people in the other vehicle. Not to mention that gas seems to hover around $3.60 here, so driving them should be cost prohibitive. Honestly, I'd be satisfied if these jackasses would first learn to not bother the rest of us by being inconsiderate with their parking. After that, I'm more than happy to berate them about being environmentally unfriendly. ;-)

I live in Los Angeles and cannot even tell you how many times I encounter this! It infuriates me to no end. I keep hoping with the increase in fuel prices, that we will start seeing less and less of these monstrosities on the road and in our parking structures. In this town, now, driving an SUV is either a way of saying... "see, I'm rich! I can still afford gas". Or, it's a way to piss off the people who actually care about the environment. (You can check out this picture I took as an example: http://goldenspiral.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/we...)

    Thanks for your post!
  • ha. How frustrating would it be to come back to the parking structure after a long day of work only to find that your car is missing because you didn't take 15 extra seconds to align it properly in the space?
  • There's a van which used to park like this in the Bus Station Parking Structure. He'd just be a few inches over the line, and there'd always be a spot next to him there, so I'd back my Focus right in beside him with an inch or so to spare. He'd still be there when I'd get home that evening.

Right outside the structure is a sign saying "Improperly vehicles will be tower. Call Sheriff at...whatever number it was." I always wanted to, but I was also always running late for my Bus :P
